3D Maryland Expert User Group: Electroplated Additive Manufactured Parts – Composites without Tooling

Learn about structural electroplating applied to resin based additive manufactured parts as a cost effective enabler to increase the performance of 3D printed parts. 3D printing removes many manufacturing constraints for designers but the constraints of the 3D printing process itself restricts the resins available for building parts to just a handful of thermoplastic and photoset materials, often with limited temperature capability. Electroplating coatings have mechanical properties equivalent to steel and can easily be applied to nearly all 3D printed resin parts to make a composite that is stiffer and stronger, more fatigue, impact, wear and heat resistant and improves long term creep performance. Additionally, properties of metal coated 3D printed resin parts can be analyzed using standard composite methodology. Steve Storck will present on hybrid structures for improving weight-specific properties such as strength, stiffness, and energy absorption per unit weight. The research presented will focus on a FDM-Nickel electroformed hybrid materials to compete with aluminum honeycomb, which is the current state of the art in the aerospace industry. The use of FDM additive manufacturing removes traditional manufacturing constraints which limit the optimization of sandwich topologies.

Dr. Sean Wise is President of RePliForm Inc, a company that specializes in applying high performance metal coatings to additive manufactured parts. Prior to working on coating AM parts, he worked on prototype tooling methods for advanced composite parts and molded thermoplastic parts.
Steve Storck is a doctoral candidate at UMBC in materials engineering. He recently received a regional award from SAMPE for his work on hybrid structures.
