RIBBON CUT AT THE CENTER FOR BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT

The Center celebrated as County Executive Ken Ulman cut the ribbon to it’s new 5,500 sq. ft. expansion on April 3. The expansion featured 10 new spacious offices to house The Center’s NeoTech Incubator companies and two new conference rooms. Three additional companies immediately occupied offices within the new space: Dresner Group, LLC; ThinkBIG!LearnSmart; and Ilex Engineering Inc.

Soon after the following companies have joined The Center’s NeoTech Incubator: . Vyalex Management Solutions, Inc., Internet Digital Broadcasting, LLC, Farfield Systems.

In total, the NeoTech Incubator now serves nearly 30 resident companies and 9 affiliate companies.

THE CENTER HOSTS SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS

On Friday, April 4, The Center for Business and Technology Development hosted a group of 12 South African women entrepreneurs for the afternoon.  Their visit was part of a three week developmental trip to Maryland sponsored by the Maxum Business Incubator in Pretoria, South Africa, the Center for Women and Information Technology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), and the Meridian International Center. Dr. Jill Sawyers, the Director of the Maxum Incubator, also accompanied the entrepreneurs.

NEOTECH INCUBATOR COMPANIES MEET WITH HOWARD COUNTY EXECUTIVE KEN ULMAN AND MARYLAND’S LT. GOVERNOR ANTHONY BROWN

On Monday, May 12, 2008, representatives from several NeoTech Incubator companies met with Howard County Executive Ken Ulman and Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown during what was the first day of the County’s Business Appreciation Week. 

County Executive Ken Ulman opened the forum by inviting ten of the newest NeoTech Incubator companies (residents and affiliates) to share information about their companies with him and the Lt. Governor. Included were company leaders from Altimax Solutions, Audacious Inquiry, Emerald Sky Technologies, Joshua Partners, Mobile Digital Systems, Netrino, Oculas Labs, Security Systems Solutions, The Dresner Group, and ThinkBIG! Learn Smart.

MARYLAND SBDC HONORS SIX AT ITS 20 YEAR CELEBRATION OPEN HOUSE

On Wednesday, June 4, the Maryland Small Business Development Center Network celebrated by honoring Howard County's local champions, Legislators, SBDC clients, and resource partners that have contributed to the success of the MDSBDC over the past 20 years. Recognized for his commitment and leadership to the Maryland Small Business Development Center was Richard “Dick” Story. Also recognized for their individual commitment to the Howard County Small Business Development Center were: Carol Morrison, Director of the NeoTech Incubator; Cynetta Cardwell, Manager of the Business Resource Center; Linda Burger, Senior Vice President of Business and Technology Development; Howard County Executive Ken Ulman; and Craig Engelhaupt, Senior Vice President of Commerce First Bank.

THE CENTER FOR BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT HAS A NEW DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE MARYLAND SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER 

The Center for the Business and Technology Development announced Mary Redmond as the new Business Counselor for the Maryland Small Business Development Center’s satellite office at The Center.

As the new Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Business Counselor, Redmond will provide counseling, technical assistance, training, and guidance for start-up entrepreneurs and expanding companies in Howard County.

SCORE HOLDS QUARTERLY MEETING

The Baltimore Chapter, Howard County Office of SCORE, held its quarterly meeting at The Center on June 4, 2008.  SCORE (Counselors to America's Small Business) has established itself as The Center's in-house presenter of the workshop Developing Your First Business Plan and is continues to formulate plans for several new programs slated to be launched in early fall, 2008.

HOWARD TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL’S EVENTS TAKE OFF 

Since January, the Howard Technology Council, the Howard Technology Council has held four free seminars offered to encourage business growth and develop educational programs for the technology community of Howard County.  Topics included: The Reverse Merger, SBA 8(a)/SBD Certification Process, Building a Monthly Assessment System: Assessments and Merit Increase Management, and How to Make an Effective Presentation

The next HTC seminar, PISA Security Clearance Process, will be on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, 8:00 - 10:00 a.m., at The Center for Business and Technology Development, 9250 Bendix Road, North, Columbia, MD 21045. HOWARD TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOINS THE MIT ENTERPRISE FORUM BOARD OF ADVISORS

Larry Collins, Executive Director of the Howard Technology Council, has named to the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Enterprise Forum’s Washington-Baltimore Board of Advisors.  His appointment will last for four years. The MIT Enterprise Forum activities provide excellent time-proven opportunities for the best networking in the area and for generating great ideas for growing and building high technology companies. Several companies that have presented at the MIT Enterprise Forum have subsequently grown to become highly successful enterprises.
