Wednesday, October 9, 2019

Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA) hosted members of the Maryland House of Delegates representing Howard County, District 13, on October 4th, 2019 for a guided tour of the newly-renovated Innovation Center @ Howard County led by HCEDA’s CEO, Larry Twele. While visiting, the Howard County Delegation had the opportunity to observe the impact their legislative support has made on the progress of the Innovation Center project. The Howard County Delegation learned more about the new resources within the Innovation Center designed to cultivate an innovative cyber and technology community.

“It was a great opportunity to host the Howard County Delegation representing District 13 at the Innovation Center. The support we have received from our elected officials has been critical to illustrating the universal interest in expanding innovation initiatives,” said Lawrence Twele, CEO of HCEDA.

During the visit, the attendees met resident partner, MITRE Viking Lab, operated by Howard County company, Trimia. District 13 representatives learned about sensor technologies being developed to create solutions to emerging challenges in port security and critical infrastructure. Partners like Trimia contribute to the centralized business-building resources in the Innovation Center.

Attendees included Senator Guy Guzzone, Delegate Jennifer Terrasa, Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary, Dylan Goldberg representing Delegate Shane Pendergrass, Captain Victoria Wyler, Air Force Program Executive Office (APFEO) for Combat and Mission Support, and HCEDA’s executive team.

“It was a pleasure to visit the Innovation Center at Howard County and learn more about Howard County Economic Development Authority’s efforts to cultivate an active cyber and technology innovation community in our region,” said Senator Guzzone. “Maryland continues to be a hotbed of innovation activity. Centers like this provide the infrastructure and support needed to grow the companies of the future.”

The Innovation Center is an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives which support companies as they instigate breakthroughs and explore new technologies in a modern, collaborative environment. The building houses the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship (MCE), HCEDA’s administrative offices, the Howard Tech Council, small business resource providers, Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), and Howard Community College’s Charles I. Ecker Training Center.

About HCEDA:

HCEDA is a public-private partnership whose primary goal is to promote economic growth and stability by supporting new and existing businesses and attracting innovative, high-growth potential companies to Howard County. HCEDA launched the Innovation Center @ Howard County in response to County and Statewide initiatives to cultivate an active cyber and technology innovation community in the Baltimore-Washington Corridor. Phase One of construction, completed in late May 2019, brought a newly designed space with an abundance of meeting, co-working and gathering spaces as well as the relocation of the MCE, the County’s only business incubator. Phase Two of construction is underway and will yield updates to the lobby, conference and meeting spaces, and HCEDA’s administrative offices. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Innovation Center @ Howard County will be held in 2020.
