Howard County Economic Development Authority and the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship are Helping Startups like Bricata Build Relationships and Accelerate Growth.
Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship (MCE) resident company Bricata, Inc. has won a sizable contract with the Chicago-based Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC). Bricata develops innovative cybersecurity solutions that have increasingly gained market traction with customers in government, financial services, large law firms, and enterprise healthcare companies. HCSC is a sizable win for Bricata as it’s the largest customer-owned health insurer in the country and an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
“We secured venture funding last year which enabled us to double down on growth, generate awareness and reach customers like HCSC with a compelling security value proposition,” said Bricata CEO John Trauth. “We’ve been able to do this, in part, because Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA) was an early believer in Bricata and was pivotal in helping us to secure early financing, business relationships, and generally get our business well-positioned for growth. We welcome HCSC to our family of customers, are genuinely grateful to HCEDA for their support, and advocate for other startups to consider setting up shop here.”
Bricata’s unique solution provides a range of advanced threat protection capabilities that includes network threat hunting on a single platform. These capabilities range from artificial intelligence to detect zero-day threats and spotting suspicious network behavior – to improved fundamentals like advanced signature detection. Bricata has seamlessly integrated these capabilities to enable deep network traffic analysis and has simplified the “art” of discovering previously unknown threats with well-defined threat hunting workflows and methods.
“Howard County has a growing reputation for being the home of top cybersecurity firms,” said Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman. “We’re located near government agencies that need cybersecurity support and we have a wealth of academic institutions in the region that are producing a talented workforce. We are thrilled with the success Bricata is finding and we’ll continue to find new ways to entice and support more entrepreneurial businesses like it to our county.”
Founded in 2014 by veterans of the cybersecurity market, the company secured a $250,000 loan from HCEDA in 2016 and relocated to Howard County. HCEDA provided business development support and helped Bricata join the MCE as a resident company in 2017.
Since joining the MCE community, Bricata has continued to foster professional relationships through the HCEDA’s small business networking platform, the Howard Tech Council, in addition to gaining funding, marketing, and brand building insights through the MCE’s specialized business development programs.
“We take great pride in supporting and watching members of our MCE community take these innovative ideas and that help transform them into thriving businesses that solve important problems,” said CEO of the HCEDA, Larry Twele. “We’re pleased to be part of the Bricata story and look forward to continuing to help them build their business development program and accelerate their growth.”
