March 06, 2013
COLUMBIA, MD – The Howard County Economic Development Authority will sponsor a Central Maryland Women in Agriculture Forum from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., March 21 at the Howard County Fairgrounds, 22120 Fairgrounds Road, West Friendship, Md.
Maryland has 12,834 farms, according to the latest census figures that measure agriculture. Of those farms, women are the principal operators of more than 2,100, or 17 percent, of them. Howard County has 335 farms and women are principal operators of 28 percent, or close to 94 farms, and that number is expected to grow. Among the topics to be discussed during the daylong session are:
- What are the risks to your operation?
- How and why you need GAP certification?
- Talking to the public, reporters and legislators
- Why diversify?
- Farming as a second career and marketing my products
- The next generation returning to the farm and incorporating their ideas
Speakers include Donna Pahl, Maryland Department of Agriculture; Howard County Councilwomen Courtney Watson and Mary Kay Sigaty; Leslie Hart, Washington County Economic Development Commission; and Laurie Savage, an agriculture reporter for Lancaster Farming and the Delmarva Farmer.
