Friday, November 8, 2019

Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA) hosted the Region on Point: Health Tech Innovation Panel & STRT1UP MD Roadshow in partnership with the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore (EAGB) and Startup Maryland. The event included a panel discussion from the region’s health tech experts, Startup MD bus pitches, and a happy hour networking session sponsored by HTC’s Health Tech Innovator’s Affinity Group.

Attendees had the opportunity to hear from national leaders in the Health Tech sector and caught up with the new Innovation Center @ Howard County, the Howard Tech Council (HTC), and Startup MD. Featured panelists included: Pete Celano – Director of Consumer Health Initiatives of MedStar Institute for Innovation, Dr. David Chin – distinguished scholar of Johns Hopkins and Bloomberg School of Public Health, Michael Batista – Director of Healthworx at BlueCross BlueShield, and Dr. Arti Varanasi – President & CEO of leading health IT company, Advancing Synergy.

HCEDA was proud to host this special celebration of innovation and entrepreneurship at the new Innovation Center @ Howard County. Opportunities like this provide startup companies with the unique opportunity to pitch their concepts to entrepreneurial experts in the region,” said Lawrence Twele, CEO of HCEDA. “The Health Tech sector in Howard County continues to impact lives across the nation for the better, and partnerships between HCEDA, EAGB, and Startup Maryland all contribute to supporting the entrepreneurs who are building upon these technologies every day. This event was a great example of the type of programming that the Innovation Center will be delivering for our local business community.”

During the networking portion of the event, startup companies were invited on the STRT1UP bus to share their ideas and concepts in the annual rally and pitch competition with several successful business leaders from the region.

“Startup Maryland was delighted to bring the STRT1UP Roadshow + Pitch Across Maryland competition to Howard County — this county has truly become a hub of innovation plus entrepreneurship and always brings out a stellar cast of founders and their ventures,” says Michael Binko, Founder and CEO of Startup Maryland. “We were pleased to focus on health tech and related innovation which demonstrates how we are a region on point for industries driving economic impact.”

“As part of the STRT1UP Roadshow ‘Where Are They Now?!’ initiative, Startup Maryland celebrated two Howard County companies who found success in the Pitch Across Maryland competition in past years — Quidient and VhedaHealth. These entrepreneurs and companies are precisely the caliber of opportunities we chose to Celebrate | Coach | Curate and Capitalize,” added Binko.

“The entire Greater Baltimore Region benefits from Howard County’s wealth of economic assets and opportunities.  Likewise, EAGB’s solid partnership with the Howard County Economic Development Authority benefits EAGB’s regional marketing efforts,” said Michele Whelley, President & CEO of EAGB.  Today’s collaboration with HCEDA and Startup Maryland shines a spotlight on the Innovation that is a driver for the region’s economic vitality and a catalyst for the world-class healthcare that our region enjoys.”

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball was also in attendance, offering some words about his vision for Howard County and acknowledging the value that entrepreneurship and innovation bring to the community.

About HCEDA and the Innovation Center @ Howard County: HCEDA is a public-private partnership whose primary goal is to promote economic growth and stability by supporting new and existing businesses and attracting innovative, high-growth potential companies to Howard County. HCEDA launched the Innovation Center in response to County and Statewide initiatives to cultivate an active cyber and technology innovation community in the Baltimore-Washington Corridor. Phase one of construction, completed in late May 2019, brought a newly designed space with an abundance of meeting, co-working and gathering spaces as well as the relocation of the MCE, the County’s only business incubator. Phase two of construction has commenced and will yield updates to the lobby, conference and meeting spaces, and HCEDA’s administrative offices. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Innovation Center will be hosted in 2020.
